In the past decade, the development of prevention/protection methods for magnesium (Mg) alloys has dramatically intensified based on the continuously broadened and deepened fundamental research into Mg alloy corrosion.This book is a continuation of the author's previously published volume, Corrosion of magnesium alloys (Woodhead Publishing, 2011). Following on the fundamental understanding regarding corrosion mechanisms and behavior of Mg and its alloys summarized in that book, this current work focuses on recently developed corrosion prevention technologies for Mg alloys. It provides a complication of comprehensive overviews and some technical details of important developments in corrosion prevention theories and practices. Part I begins with a review of corrosion behavior of Mg and its alloys, discussing corrosion issues and protection strategies associated with corresponding corrosion characteristics, corrosion resistance enhancement by rare earth element alloying, and inhibition techniques for Mg alloys. In Part II, the book delves into the core of corrosion prevention engineering. This section reviews how Mg alloy surfaces are modified or changed in state, composition, and microstructure by means of cleaning, machining, alloying, beam treatment, anodizing, and conversion. The third group of chapters presents the more popular and effective surface engineering processes, including metallic and organic coatings, such as normal electro- and electroless plating, innovative ionic liquid plating, recently developed cold spraying, traditional organic painting, new electroless E-coating, and novel sol-gel layer formation. The conclusion offers two examples to illustrate corrosion control designs and corrosion resistance enhancement skills for Mg alloys in the automotive and medical industries.
